Daily Dictator

Remember that "unanimous" election that they just got done with back in May over in Syria? Well, it seems that, much like we predicted, if you were brave enough to vote against Bashar al-Assad (and they do make it pretty obvious that you wouldn't want to), bad things will happen:

According to the Akhbar Al-Sharq website, the Syrian intelligence apparatus has arrested Syrian citizen Mesbah 'Alaa Al-Din, from Al-Ladhaqiya province, because in the May 2007 referendum he voted against a second term for Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.

The Syrian Human Rights Organization has reported that no trace of Al-Din has been found following his arrest, and that the intelligence apparatus is refusing to release any information about him.

My prayers will be with Mr al-Din's family, because there is no doubt that the government of Nancy Pelosi's most intimate friend has not allowed him to survive his fatal vote.

My Democratic friends: is 97% of the vote still a "mandate" when the result of voting against the regime is fatal?

Hark! A chinless ophthalmologist this way comes!

Syrian President Bashar Assad reviews an honor guard upon his arrival at the parliament in Damascus, Thursday May 10, 2007. Assad said Thursday the current Israeli government was weak and is not prepared for a just peace [ed.: Note these codewords, they're very critical.] with the Arabs, but cautioned that it could still wage war. Addressing the opening of the newly elected parliament, the Syrian leader also denied direct or secret contacts with Israel and stressed the longstanding Syrian demand for withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Golan Heights in return for peace with the Jewish state. I don't call him a "dictator" for nothing, folks. He appears to be confident enough in Iran's backing that he can dictate whatever policy to the region that he wants.

Of course, the fawning press would gladly give him that power.

One thing to note very seriously, though: If Assad is talking about Israel being "weak," you can mark my words that he's preparing for war. If you're wondering why I can so confidently say that, I suggest reading up a bit on the practice of hudna. Continue reading »

Who knew that chinless ophthalmologists drove everyday cars?

Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) supports terrorism!

Syrian President Bashar Assad, left, receives US Democratic Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) in Damascus, Syria, Wednesday Dec. 13 2006 and reviews with him the latest developments in Iraq, the Palestinian territories and in Lebanon. Assad's meeting with the Florida Democrat was his first with a U.S. official since the Iraq Study Group recommended last week that Washington should engage Syria and Iran in efforts to curb the bloodletting in Iraq. (AP Photo /Sana).

Senator Nelson, I could've sworn that the Department of State was solely responsible for representing the United States to foreign governments. Why would you bother to meet with a known sponsor terrorism, other than to somehow improve your party's chances of success in the 2008 elections?

To think that a mere 40 years ago, such actions were still identified as what they are:

HIGH TREASON

Update: Provided a picture of the happy couple, above.

Here is the Dishonourable Nelson's side of the story. Even as a future member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, there is no precedence for Senators conducting the foreign policy of the nation, is there? Why else would the Congress have created the Department of State, anyway??

Update again: Condoleeza Rice has reiterated that direct talks with the terrorist supporters in Syria and Iran are not on the table. Is the Congress planning on pursuing its own foreign policy, wholly seperate and distinct from the Executive Branch's? If so, can they please consider seceding into their own nation to do so, so they don't get the rest of us killed?

And yet again: I'm very pleased to report that Doug Ross has fired up the ol' trusty Blogotronic™ recorder and presented us with an unofficial transcript of the surely intellectual depths that these two reached. My favorite part:

Not to worry. It's off the record as far as I'm concerned. One last thing: I wanted to present a gift on the behalf of the people of the great state of Florida... It's an NCAA Championship Basketball autographed by the Florida Gators!

Thanks, Doug! It's fitting for the Senator to prefer the Gators, though I hope for the Booster's sake that Assad is, truly, not an FSU fan.

Go 'Noles!

Lebanon part Deux? Or, Israel vs. Syria!

I assume these are non-Zionist kids?
IT seems that Israel may be planning to go after Hezbullah's enablers in Syria (h/t FR and Larwyn). This ought to inspire a sleepless night or two for Bashar Assad... though it will be interesting to see if Iran is dragged into the war or not.

Most interestingly, we learn from the JPost that, "Israel's response to a Syrian attack will be nothing like," the war in Lebanon, but will rather be "harsher, fiercer and far deadlier."

Bring it on, good sirs. You have my support in clearing out that nest of vipers!

Update 16:02 EST: Then again, according to Ha'aretz, Assad may be willing to enter into a peace deal. Of course, this is with the typical disclaimer, "provided that 'an impartial arbiter' could be found." To someone such as myself, that sounds oddly enough like an excuse to reject anyone who tries to broker a deal, so I wouldn't expect Syria to be signing any treaties anytime soon.

Expect the Hudna to continue, either way.

Dictatorship Shot of the Day

This really doesn't require any explanation, does it?

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus, August 15, 2006. Syria will keep supporting Hamas and Hizbollah despite U.S. threats to impose more sanctions on it, a government newspaper said on Thursday. (Khaled al-Hariri/Reuters)

My question is: Who's dumber? Him for flaunting "western world resolve" (represented by the ever-flauntable UnTIEd Nations), or us for continuing to put up with the dictatorial terrorist regime in Syria?

Update 12:24 EST: Alright, I couldn't resist. Today's going to be a "twofer."

A man stands between portraits of the Iranian late revolutionary founder Ayatollah Khomeini, left, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, right, and Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, as he listens to Ahmadinejad's speech during a public gathering in the city of Karaj, 21 miles (35 kilometers) west of the capital Tehran, Iran, Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006. Ahmadinejad on Thursday rejected demands that Tehran suspend its uranium enrichment activities, saying his government was determined to continue pursuing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. I kinda like the "wispy" look on Ahmad-whatever's face.

Dictatorship Shot of the Day

Still on my quest to educate the nutroots. My weekends are usually full of other activities, so today will probably be another slow one for me. Sorry in advance!

Syrian citizens walk in front of a billboard showing Syrian President Bashar Assad, at a street in Damascus, Syria, Wednesday Sept. 13, 2006. The rapid response by Syrian guards at the US embassy on Tuesdaywon rare praise from the United States, which accuses President Bashar Assad's government of supporting terrorism in its backing of Hezbollah guerrillas and Palestinian militants. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said,'I do think that the Syrians reacted to this attack in a way that helped to secure our people, and we very much appreciate that.'(AP Photo/Hussein Malla)

Right, because it's important to make sure that everyone is on friendly terms with Bashar Assad. Can any of you Nutsrooters point to a single city in the United States that has large portraits of George W. Bush on billboards all over town?

I didn't think so.

Syria? Dictatorship.

The United States? Still not a dictatorship.
