Snapped Shot

Always Watching the All-Seeing Eye

Islamic Joy Boy?

Somebody's hot for Sadr.

Let's Play: Ragie or No Ragie?

Could it be? Could I have really missed our own Shakeel Bhat, world-famous Islamic Rage Boy, in one of the protest photographs from Kashmir that I highlighted recently?

Loyal reader Arvind says that I have missed him, indeed. And you know what? I'd have to say that I would be sorely disappointed in the proverbial "Powers of Me" if I did!

I'll leave it up to you, the reader to decide. The best way to determine a person's identity, as far as I've been able to tell from the newswires, is their chompers. Their teeth.

On the left, our protester in question. On the right, every mid-res copy of Rage Boy's teeth that I've got on file. Can you figure this mystery out?

There can be only one.

Best Protester, Evar

Seriously, this guy is absolutely going to give Islamic Rage Boy a run for his money. Especially when you figure out what this genius used to make his mask!

First, look at [Photo 1], and see if you can figure it out.

Answer [here], whenever you're ready for it.

And believe me, you'll never be ready!

Rage Boy Sighting!

Bob Owens ran across our little Raging pal in a conversation between John McCain and B. Hussein Obama.

Well, sort of.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it anyway, but otherwise, it's well worth the excuse to repost this picture:

"I support B. Hussein Obama for president in 2008."

Rage Boy Sighting, Jury Day Edition

I'm on the second day of my jury service to Gerry Connolly's Fairfax County. I'll have more on that once the trial has come to a conclusion, but until then, I'll be away from computer.

To make up for it, here's the latest Islamic Rage Boy sighting, brought to us by my good friend Per Gudmundson of Sweden's conservative daily newspaper SvD. It seems that Rage Boy is quite upset over the "Settement" of "kashmir" on the "pattern of palestine."

It's an AP photo, so I can't show it to you. In lieu of that, Per sends along this link, to a site that I can only assume is a licensed AP customer.

I'll be seeing y'all again in a day or so. Sorry for the silence until then!

Rage Rookies

You might think you're the stuff of legend, until you cower at the sight of a piddly little effigy.

Kashmiri Shiite Muslim activists shout anti-US slogans as they beat a burning effigy of US President George W. Bush during a protest rally in Srinagar, 14 June 2007. Hundreds of Shiites Muslims in Indian administered Kashmir blocked roads as they protested an attack on a revered Shiite shrine in Iraq. Deafening blasts razed Al-Askari mosque's two gold-covered minarets 13 June, in the largely Sunni town of Samarra north of Baghdad raising fears of a resurgence in intercommunal violence. US President George W. Bush blamed Al-Qaeda for the attack, saying it was meant to inflame sectarian violence in Iraq. (Zuma Press/Altaf Zargar) [Photo via Newscom]

Rage Boy Sighting, Where's Rage Boy? Edition

[Ed.:—Now that I have coffee, let me try writing this again...] I am definitely enjoying having some alternate photo angles of the protests that are going on over in Kashmir right now, thanks to my hopeful friends over at Newscom.

In fact, here's a good example of the value that their service provides for me:—If it weren't for this Zuma Press photo, we would have totally missed this latest Rage Boy Sighting, which I've so helpfully packaged into a new Where's Rage Boy? featurette:

[Ed.:—There, that sounds much better. Now back to the coffee pot for me!]

Update: In true "Where's Waldo" fashion, see if you can correctly identify the following:

Rage Boy Sighting!

There appears to be something of a tiff going on in Srinagar right now, with the wires reporting that they're in the midst of an 8-day strike, instigated by the hardline (and totally "rageiriffic") All Parties Hurriyat Conference.

You know what that means, don't you?

Kashmiri muslims shout pro freedom slogans during a protest in summer capital of Indian Kashmir June 29, 2008. Police fired teargas shells for a 7th Day on Sunday as hundreds of stone pelting protesters staged fresh street demonstrations in parts of Kashmir's main city against a government decision to transfer forest land to a Hindu shrine trust. At least 4 People died and 450 Including Protestors and Security men are injured since the protest began (Newscom TagID: zumawirewestphotos189907) [Photo via Newscom]

Far be it from me to point out that the timing of this protest, which started on about the same day I left town on vacation, is totally coincidental. Honest.

Anyway, more fully-licensed Islamic Rage Boy hilarity can be found beyond the fold. Stay tuned for updates! Continue reading »

Rage Friends Sighting!

I got an e-mail from a little soon-to-be-announced birdie, asking if I'd like to try out a new service that he's thinking of subscribing to that would allow something unspecified related to photo wire services—Which sounds fantastic to me, considering my history in the matter.

As an immediate test of this new service, here's a sighting today of some Friends of Shakeel "Islamic Rage Boy" Bhat in Srinagar—What else did you expect me to search for?—Imagine that: Rage Giant (L) and the Rage Pirate (R), both in one shot!

Jun 20, 2008 - Srinagar, Kashmir, India - Supporters of All Parties Hurriyat Conference during a protest in Srinagar. Hundreds of supporters of hurriyat alongwith party chairman syed ali shah gilani came on streets of srinagar to protest against the human rights violations and Amarnath Hindu Pilgrimage shrine board who have used some 800 Kanals land during yatra in summer capital of indian Kashmir (Something's wrong with the captions, I think. I'll update with the correct attribution when I can find it.) [Photo via Newscom]

Rage Giant Sighting

Feel his rage.
It looks like one of Islamic Rage Boy's best friends has been spotted in the news again, this time protesting against the transfer of forest land to a shrine. Here's the wire coverage, courtesy our friends at Agence France-Presse and European Press Agency:

[Photo 1, Photo 2, Photo 3, Photo 4, Photo 5, Photo 6]

I haven't seen any sign of Shakeel "IRB" Bhat yet, but if he shows up, you know we'll be there to cover it!

Previously: Rage Giant Sighting.

Rage Boy (Impersonator) Sighting

I've seen some pretty serious Islamic Rage Boy impersonators over the past year.

This guy totally takes the cake.

Totally.

He's got the stuff that legends are made of. Let's just see if he has the skill to succeed.

In the mean-time, any readers care to try their hand at naming our new rage dude? You know what to do.

Rage Boy Double Sighting!

Per Gudmundson, a columnist for the conservative Swedish daily SVD, writes to inform me that I missed Rage Boy in a recent Associated Press photograph. Says the good Mr. Gudmundson:

The other day Snapped Shot showed us that Islamic Rage Boy is back in the news. Seems like the wire services haven't learned s--t. Brian Ledbetter then waxed around the thought that AP maybe had learned the lesson, since only AFP featured the pictures. Well, they haven't. Rage Boy is back with a vengeance. He's not only seen at AFP - he's also featured in this picture, brought to us by AP, courtesy of photographer Dar Yasin (this Dar Yasin?). The demo, according to the text, took place two days after the previous AFP sighting, but Rage Boy still wears the same shirt. The wire services smell more, though

Thank you very much for sending that in, Per—I stand corrected! There Shakeel was, sitting right in front of my nose this whole time!

Ever since this site discovered Mr. Bhat's follies almost a year ago, he has continued to be used by the press as a symbol of anti-Western outrage for all of Kashmir. But, as many people who've written to me since then have expressed, most of Kashmir is not really all that angry.

So why do the media continue to use the expressions of one extremely small group to represent a much larger, mostly happy population?

Could it really be that our photojournalists are bending over backwards to bring "the truth" to newsreaders around the world?

Or is the industry more interested in prizes and awards?

Rage Boy Sighting!

Forest, who's a regular reader around here, pinged me over the extended weekend to say that he's spotted our old friend Shakeel "Islamic Rage Boy" Bhat in a protest. It stinks that I missed the sighting when it happened, but sure enough, Mr. Bhat has definitely been up to his regular trade, this time protesting the indignity committed by a U.S. sniper against the holy Qur'an.

From our friends over at Agence France-Presse, via ANP-Photo, we see Rage Boy in action: [Shot 1] [Shot 2]

It's interesting to note that the major wire services seem to be avoiding Shakeel now, with AP and Reuters both ignoring him completely. I'm not sure if this is editorial policy (i.e., our vaunted editorial staff are finally blocking his staged outrage from the feed), or if he's just not "in" with their stringers any longer, but it's certainly an interesting question. At least AFP (and, occasionally, EPA) continues to carry his picture.

Rage Journalist

So much anger.

And so little time.
