A case for greater fact-checking

It's cases like this that remind us of why we have slander and libel laws. The New York Post reports today that the news wires seem to have mixed things up when reporting about a sexual predator.

Eddie Johnson was mistaken in some media reports for another Eddie Johnson - a retired 10-year NBA player from Florida who was arrested Tuesday night and charged with sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl.


Which wires sent out the erroneous information? A brief review seems to indicate that the Associated Press is responsible. Great fact-checking, guys. I'm sure you'll be hearing from Mr. Johnson's lawyers soon, no doubt.

Next time, you might want to try following the golden rule of reporting: Trust, but verify. Doing that might save a buck or two on lawyer fees.
