To the victor goes the spoil?

To nobody's surprise, the corrupt, nepotistic regime (ok, so it's the other corrupt, nepotistic regime) Hezbullah is handing out foreign aid in Southern Lebanon only to its supporters.

Locals have complained that aid is being doled out on the basis of political favouritism, with Amal and Communist party supporters getting preference.


So, not only is Hezbullah accused of counterfeit charity, they're only supporting people who support them.

Who said you can't go places with graft?

There is a Lebanese saying:

"Balad bala nassarah khsra" : "A country without christians is lost"...

This applies to the entire Middle East; the latest war, on the heels of the Invasion of Iraq, has rendered the region uninhabitable for Christians. They have their faults, but in the context of the Middle East, they exert a moderating force. Look at the make-up of Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, and Syria. You find Christians embedded with any other community, like a cement. No wonder Bashir Gemayel once said that the Christians "are the demons of this Middle East and its Angels".

The other communities never mix. Remove the cement, and nothing holds together; the pieces can only knock around, break, and fall.

Today, in the aftermath of the latest war, Lebanon fell prey to the shock between Shiite fundamentalists and Israeli ignorance/hubris. As the economic aftermath drives Christians away, their moderating influence will wane, as in Palestine.

As Christians leave Lebanon, expect more such shocks to come.
