Gerry Connolly's Fairfax County

I've been reading articles like this for months now, and it just occurred to me that y'all might be interested in this as well. So, to kick off what will undoubtedly be an endless series of fun, I present to you the first edition of Gerry Connolly's Fairfax County:

Gerry Connolly's Springfield.
A 27-year-old Springfield resident was robbed as he walked in the early morning from a taxi to the door of his apartment in the 7200 block of Commerce Street, according to Fairfax County Police.

The incident occurred at about 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9. The victim was approached by three men and knocked to the ground.

While one man displayed a handgun and another a knife, the victim gave the suspects an undisclosed amount of money and the trio fled in a red sedan traveling south on Commerce Street toward Old Keene Mill Road. The victim was not hurt.

The suspect with the gun was described as black and in his 20s, wearing a black jacket a baggy shirt and a hat.

The second and third suspects were described as Hispanic and in their 20s and both wore white jackets.

The area in question is home to a K-Mart, a Trader Joe's, and was at some arbitrary point in the past, a rather safe place to be. (Much like my old haunt, the now hopelessly gang-ridden Springfield Mall.)

Update: If you're wondering why I'm picking on Poor Gerry, start reading here, and continue here. If anyone in this county deserves single-handed blame for our dramatic decline in quality-of-life, Gerry certainly does.

*Amen on this! I've been living in Fairfax/Arlington/Falls Church for the past 20 years and continue to watch the steady decline. My family's last move was out of the Bailey's Crossroads area because it had become a twisted middle-eastern and central-american 3rd-World nightmare.

*Cap'n,

Glad I struck a note with this one, there's certainly no shortage of documentation on our dramatic decline in quality of life here in Connolly County. I've lived here off and on since '89, and can remember a county that was far different than what we see today.

Strangely enough, we've noticed an accelerated decline in our area of the county (Kingstowne) in the past 2 or 3 years as well, in the sense that things are starting to look "run down," as well as there being a general increase in crime ("burglaries" being my preferred bellwether measurement).

The high school I went to, same area of the county, has turned from being one of the better, "safer" schools in the area, to one that's falling farther in the Virginia SOL tests every year.

While it's still not as bad as some of the other areas of our region that are having problems (Manassas Park, Woodbridge, Annandale, and Sterling), it's definitely getting there. Reason enough for us to start looking for a better area of the county to live in. If you happen to know the "Secret Handshake" needed to purchase a house in Fairfax Station, be sure to let me know what it is. ;-)

Regards,
Brian
