Spending Other People's Money

To absolutely nobody's surprise, I'm amused to learn from Jim Bacon that Virginia's latest budgetary shortfall is most likely anything but.

Gee, where have I heard that before?

Anyone?

I really do look forward to the day in which we can discuss our Commonwealth's budget without piling on the "need more taxes, or else" hysteria.

*Just to the north we just had a special session to address the structural deficit (i.e. soak the taxpayers).

For some perspective:
1) Maryland is already #15 is taxes per capita according to the Tax Foundation
2) Maryland's budget has doubled over the past decade form $15 to $30 billion
3) The shortfall was (no more than) $1.7 billion, less than 6% of the overall budget. There's no way it couldn't have been addressed by some belt tightening.

*I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I have no idea how you put up with that atrocity of a state, SD. I know you've got long-running ties there, but c'mon, you've got to relocate to the "sane" side of the Potomac sooner or later, don'tcha? :-)

Until such time, to quote Slick Willie—I feel your pain, man.

Regards,
Brian

*In NW Baltimore there's a pretty strong Orthodox Jewish community. I live there for the religious environment, not for the politics.

Last I checked you had a Democratic governor too. :-(

*I understand completely... Longstanding ties aren't something to lightly break.

Don't worry about us down here—we force our Democratic governors to behave like Republicans, whether they like it or not. ;-)

Regards,
Brian
